Summary on Tuas water reclamation plant; Draft 1
In the article, “Singapore’s First Integrated Water and Solid Waste Treatment Facility Begins Construction” the National Environmental Agency (NEA) (2020) states that with Tuas water reclamation plant (Tuas WRP) and integrated waste management facility (IWMF) built, waste treatment would be more efficient and environmentally friendly. To prepare for water usage potentially being doubled by 2060, Singapore decided to construct Tuas WRP. It consists of two “energy- efficient membrane bio-reactor system” which treats both domestic and industrial used water. Used water flows through sewers and tunnels, under Ayer Raja Expressway, to Tuas WRP. Finally, it is integrated to NEWater factory for further purification.
It is mentioned that IWMF can “process multiple waste streams for higher resource and energy recovery while reducing its environmental and land use footprint” compared to the conventional Waste-to-Energy plants (WTE). In accordance with NEA, Tuas WRP and IWMF will be completed tentatively by 2025 and 2028, respectively.
